 "See The Fair From The Air"

Nur noch Souvenirs - Münzen, Postkarten, Fotos - erinnern an eine gigantische Seilbahn, die oft (fälschlich) als Schwebefähre eingestuft wird.

Highlight der Weltausstellung 1933, die zum 100jährigen Stadtjubiläum in Chicago stattfand und unter dem Motto "A Century of Progress" stand, war der "SkyRide".
Seine Türme waren 191 Meter hoch - höher als jedes andere Gebäude nicht nur in Chicago; der Skyride galt zu jener Zeit als die "tallest man-man structure west of Manhattan".

Postkarte

Tausende folgten dem Aufruf: "See The Fair from The Air", schwebten über eine Lagune und blickten herab auf die festlich illuminierten Art-deco-Pavillons zu ihren Füßen.

Great thrill


At the Chicago World's Fair 1933 the spectacular Skyride was a "great thrill feature of A Century of Progress". The transporter bridge was higher than any building in Chicago: "Six hundred and twenty-eight feet they rise into the skies, with observation floors atop them. On a 200-foot level the rocket cars offer you a beautiful and thrilling ride across the lagoon, suspended
from a cableway."


Designed and built in the space of six month for the world exposition "A Century of Progress" in Chicago. It carried ten suspended cars with 36 passengers in each car. During its operation it carried a total of 4 500 000 passengers. It was subsequently demolished using dynamite on one tower and a charge of Thermit packed around the base of the other.
